About CareerCamp

College of the Canyons Career Center presents CareerCampSCV, an unconference dedicated to helping you build the career you deserve. The day will include scheduled speakers, ad hoc presentations and breakout sessions on all aspects of building your career. CareerCamp is for anyone who wants to build and/or improve their career.

This event is a follow up to a successful event delivered January 2010 in Northridge, CA, where 125 people exchanged career ideas and built personal networks. Read more about the Northridge CareerCampLA here.

CareerCampSCV is a free event. This is not a job fair. No one is offering employment. No volunteer gets paid.

It is a grass roots effort to empower the Santa Clarita community with career strategies: to share, enlightened and inform. We welcome your participation. We welcome your input and support.

CareerCampSCV 2012 Strives to Help you Build the Career you Deserve

(Santa Clarita, CA) – CareerCampSCV 2012 is a FREE, unconference/unconference dedicated to “helping you build the career you deserve”. It is being brought to by the Career Center of the College of the Canyons. Seminars will include scheduled speakers, ad hoc presentations and breakout sessions on everything from transitioning between careers, enhancing your skills to climb the company ladder, being your own career coach and staying positive in negative times.

CareerCampSCV will be held 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at the

Preregistration is requested to avoid overcrowding. Attendees can register and receive tickets for free at the CareerCampSCV web site: http://careercampSCV.wordpress.com.

While CareerCampSCV will have some scheduled speakers, there will also be an unconference element where interested attendees can speak during open slots and decide the topics of breakout sessions. The unconference idea supports the fact that there is a large amount of knowledge in the existing community and gives everyone a chance to share what they know with others.

Mitch Krayton

Mitch Krayton is a speaker, trainer, author and coach for Sales, Leadership and Interpersonal Communications. For ten years he owned an executive recruiting firm. He then started and ran a computer consulting firm for 20 years, which helped businesses in graphic communication transition to digital technology.

Mitch served as a presenter for several community career events for kids including Discovering Careers, Connecting 2 Success, VIAStar and several Jr. Achievement Programs. Mitch is excited to now reach out to adults in this challenging time.

Mitch is a native Californian, married to Linda for nearly 40 years and has lived in Santa Clarita for the past 12 years. He is a Distinguished Toastmaster and received the Golden Microphone Award from the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the National Speakers Association.

Anthony Michaelides

Anthony Michaelides has been the Director, Career Services & Job Placement at College of the Canyons for the past 8 years. He specializes in resume critique and development, interview preparation, career counseling and the job search process. Previous to this, he worked for the County Schools Office of Education in Ventura, and ITT Technical Institute. With a Master’s Degree in Psychology, he enjoys the challenge of helping individuals to navigate their career and job search by applying strategies and common sense throughout the process.

Throughout his professional career, Anthony has had experience with career development at all stages in life. Whether it be an elementary school student listening to a professional classroom speaker, junior high school student touring a company, high school student completing a job shadow, college student completing an internship, or a seasoned professional making a career change, he has been there to make it happen.

Risa Rosenthal

Risa’s operations background and knowledge of Life and Health insurance industry shows her passion to help recruit and train agents to educate the consumer as well as help build successful careers.

Her extensive years in the industry span from leading insurance companies, brokerage, broker-dealer, benefit enrollment companies, general agency. This background enabled her to help develop operation procedures for Financial Institution and Affinity Market call centers.

Douglas E. Welch

Douglas E. Welch serves as writer and host of the Career Opportunities blog and podcast, a weekly show dedicated to “Helping You Build the Career You Deserve.”

Utilizing his own experience as a high-tech careerist, Douglas began writing for trade publications such as Infoworld, Network World, and Macworld magazine in 1991. The print version of Career Opportunities began in ComputorEdge Magazine in 1997 and the podcast was born a week after the the term was coined in 2004, making him a podcast pioneer. Douglas also operates the Career Opportunities Community, providing readers a place to share information and discuss career issues.

Douglas has lately been combining his career expertise and new media knowledge to help people use new media to spread the word about “what they do and how well they do it” to as many people as possible. His newest blog and podcast, Careers in New Media, regularly explores this intersection of career building, including Facebook, blogging, Twitter and more. He is also the founder of New Media Interchange, a free group dedicated to bringing the power of New Media to everyone.
